Five minutes with Hello May
What exactly is bow and arbour?
We create bespoke, storytelling wedding zines® - short for magazine, contemporary for wedding album. Design, photography, print and weddings are individually distinct. But marry them – and your wedding day memories come to life.
How do your wedding zines stack up against a traditional wedding album?
The wedding zine idea arose out of us not wanting a traditional album – truth be told, we thought that 50 fine art images of just us might be somewhat self-absorbed!
Designed by us, wedding zines feature up to 400 photos in a modern layout among any special wording - your vows, the song lyrics to your first dance or a few favourite messages from inside your guestbook, enabling the true story of your wedding day to be shared.
Compounding this, is that we print any number of copies between two and ten, which is important to us because wedding zines should be shared with parents, grandparents and anyone else who’d like a copy.
How many pages are they / how many photos fit in an album?
Our standard wedding zine is 200 pages and features between 250 and 400 photographs.
That said, we’re about to launch an engagement/elopement version, which will be 100 pages featuring between 150 and 250 photos.
Most popular cover design?
We’ve seen quite a variety so far! We offer fresh and unique cover design concepts to each and every couple. But generally, definitely an image featuring the couple.
Additional bespoke options include foiling, and hand lettering by Jasmine Dowling – we’re biased, but a cover containing an image of the couple, lettering by Jasmine and foil, is the ultimate!
Where are your magazines printed? Tell us about the paper stocks?
Our wedding zines are designed and printed in Australia, using a mix of FSC and PEFC certified paper stocks. Furthermore, the stocks are certified as archival, ensuring wedding zines last a lifetime. We are also avid recyclers of any paper waste.
Selection of paper stocks was a painstaking process and we constantly endeavour to stay on trend and in the habit of maintaining a refined and timeless aesthetic.
Talk us briefly through the process from start to finish…
We’ve tried to make our website as user-friendly as possible, and our FAQs are constantly updated.
Once someone makes a purchase online, he or she receives a confirmation email with instructions on how to provide photos (and in what resolution etc.) and wording.
We also encourage couples to send design pieces from their stationery suite, as we love to incorporate as many personal touches as possible.
Upon receipt of photos and wording, we aim to have a digital proof to the couple within 10 working days. Once approved by the couple for print, we aim for a delivery timeframe of 15 working days.
Inspiration behind starting business?
Bow & Arbour is the result of a genuine case of us not finding what we wanted in a wedding album in the marketplace. We both love and admire stories and photographers do a wonderful job of capturing them.
A wedding is the climax of any love story and it is our hope that wedding zines become the go-to product for ensuring that story is told and shared.
Favourite style of wedding?
We’re wilderness people, so hands down a marquee wedding overlooking mountains, rivers or plains, with top-notch lawn games and cold beer (we’re not wine drinkers) to complement the setting!
Where are you based? Do you ship Australia wide or internationally?
We’re based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland (lucky us), but we ship everywhere! To date we’ve had orders despatched to the UK, US, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, and even the UAE.
Anything else you’d like to mention?
We have tried to make our products as affordable as possible, so that they can be enjoyed by many. To this end, we have created the Fancy Deposit, which is a wedding planning product that saves you $200 on your wedding zine order. Furthermore, we have payment plans available across most of our product range.
Finally, thank you for this opportunity and your time Sophie and Claire.
